Wimberley Lions Serve Campers at Texas Lions Camp
On June 23, 2024, several volunteers from the Wimberley Lions traveled to Kerrville to cook and serve a picnic dinner to children at the Texas Lions Camp. Wimberley Lions President, Doug McLean, said, ““This summer camp is offered free of charge to children ages 7-16 with Down’s syndrome, autism, type-1 diabetes and physical disabilities. They even have weekend camps for the kids' families to join in the fun. It's so uplifting to talk to these amazing kids and hear how they benefit from the camp activities. This is our way to serve our community, the kids and the camp’s staff. Everyone may not know that tips to the concession stands helps to fund this amazing camp. We thank all Market Days shoppers who support the kids.”
The Texas Lions Camp site originally was a sanitorium established by the American Legion. Followed by US Veterans Administration hospital in 1925. In 1948, as a nationwide polio epidemic raged, Lion Jack Roe, working with the Kerrville Lions Club, promoted the concept of a special camp for children afflicted. The camp currently serves as a place of education and respite for thousands of children with downs syndrome, diabetes, or children with disabilities. The Lions motto “We Serve” results in providing children campers with education, entertainment and memories to last their lifetime.
